Transforming our communities by the love of God

Sunday Message – 27th Jan 2013

Image of smooth faced Jacob & Hairy faced Esau

Sermon Theme: Jacob and Esau: The Blessing

Scripture:  Gen 25: 19-34Gen 27: 1-40

Summary:
This week’s installment shows us the steamier side of patriarchal life. Here are events worthy of the Hollywood treatment, directed, on the face of it, by pure human intrigue. Here is jealousy, favouritism, deception and lies. Yet through it all God the Sovereign Lord, despite His people rather than through them, manages to keep His plans on course.

For further reflection:
What can such events and such behaviour, happening in such a different culture so long ago, say to us today? Is there anything to learn, apart from what NOT to do? Let’s see…

Sunday Message – 21st Jan 2013

Rebekah offering water to Abraham's servant and camels

Sermon Theme: ‘Isaac and Rebekah: The Marriage’

Scripture:  Genesis 24:34 – 51

Summary:
Given Abraham’s experiences regarding Isaac, his son and heir, you’ll understand his keen interest in the right bride for his son. He sends out his servant to help find just the right girl. Rebekah seems to answer all the desired qualities.

We explore the ways in which the marriage of Abraham’s son give us insight into God’s desire for the Bridegroom, Jesus, to have a beautiful bride, the church.

For further reflection:
What comes to mind when you think of the concept of ‘holiness’? How can we work together to present Jesus a beautiful bride?

Sunday Message – 13th Jan 2013

Drawing of Issac on the altar as Abraham raises his knife

Sermon Theme: ‘The Patriarchs: Abraham and Isaac – The Test’

Scripture:  Genesis 22:1 – 19

Summary:
Having received a promise from God that he would be the father of a great nation, Abraham was overjoyed at the birth of his son Isaac. How then would he respond to the call of God to sacrifice His son? How did this make sense? Is this what God was like?

How can we make sense of this unusual request from God? Today we consider what it means to present ourselves to God as living sacrifices as Paul suggests in Romans 12: 1 – 2

For further reflection:
Is your faith living or dead? Are you alive to God or numb to his presence? Are you serving Him joyfully or out of routine? Read Romans 12:1 – 2 this week and use it to inspire your prayer responses to God.

Sunday Message 6th Jan 2013

The book of Genesis

Sermon Theme:‘The Patriarchs: Covenant and Kingdom’ – Abraham

Scripture:  Genesis 15: 1 – 8, 17 – 21

Summary:
It is in the very heart of God that He has a people amongst whom He can dwell. Today, we look explore the way God calls Abram out of obscurity and into a covenant agreement with God as Abraham, the father of many nations.

On this, our Covenant Sunday, we consider what it is to be ‘called out’ and to live together as a covenant community of God’s people. We affirm our commitment to have God as our God and to be true to the promises that discipleship in the Way of Jesus demands.

For further reflection:
What is God asking you to do? How can Trinity help you do it? Take some time in this week, at the beginning of the year, and ask God what your commitment to Him will require of you in this time.
